Great work Manjusha. I just bought a new piano for my son, before sending him for piano classes I just thought surfing google to see what's there about playing songs on piano. That's how I hit your blog.

I don't know much about music, but I am very much interested. I just wanted to know how to play the song with the letters. Like, the note which you provided - D E A E D - how to use it ? Putting it in other words how to play it for a person like me who does nt know anything abt piano

@ Mahesh,

There are two aspects to playing a song on the piano. First the tune notes, which are played with the right hand, and second, the chord notes played with the left. As a beginner, I suggest you start with the tune notes first. In the notations I post, the first line of notes below the lyrics is the tune and the next line is the chord. So, ignore the lines containing things like [C], [Dm], etc. Only focus on the tune notes.

Next you need to know where the notes are located on your keyboard. On this page: http://sari-gama.blogspot.com/2009/09/technique-for-playing-chords.html I have posted a few images that indicate which key corresponds to which note. When I first started to play the piano, I pasted small labels above each key with the note written over the label.

The basics being said, it requires lots of practice to play it right with the correct tempo. Don't get disheartened if you don't get it right. If you scroll down my list of songs and start listening all the way from the bottom-up, you'll understand how I started :) I did come a long way and much more to go.

Wishing you and your son best wishes!

@ Pooja,

Since you're taking piano lessons, I say, wait till your teacher tells you about chords. I learnt them from some random websites, so there's no guarantee I play the chords right. Once you learn something, it becomes hard to unlearn it :) That said, if you're really in a hurry, I suggest you look at this: http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano/

You'll then know which keys to hit together to play a chord. Contrary to what you thought, Dm is not a key but a combination of three keys: F, A, and D.

You could also refer to my chords table in one of the chords tutorials I posted.

CAN I HAVE sa re ga ma FOR THIS SONG...I LOVE THIS SNG SO MUCH..PLEASE.....

Manjusha said...

@ Naishal,

Converting to sa-re-ga-ma is pretty easy, but takes a little time - which I don't have right now :( Why don't you try to do the translation yourself using the table given in: http://sari-gama.blogspot.com/2008/08/mapping.html

Great Job Manjusha.
I was looking for notations for hindi songs for my daughter.
she has been learning piano since last 3 years with western notation and piano corse books which prepares for london trinity college test.
But as of now-she is loosing interest in playing and practising english musics like waltz etc and the songs which she is not able to sing.
she loves singing hindi songs-so i want to take a chance by encouraging her to play the songs she likes .

can you please help me as to how to guide her with westen notation.

help is highly appreciated.
do mail on neetushu@gmail.com
thanks,
neetu

Hi
Its an awsome site. Thanks so much for putting it online.

What helped me the most was the actual style, tempo and voice details that you have posted on newer entries. Is it possible to post this information for all the songs that you have on your site.

That would make it even 'awsomer'.

Thanks so much anyways.

This is the first time I'm visiting your website as I was looking for "Piano Lyrics for Hindi Songs". My mother-in-law who is visiting us used to play hindi songs on the piano in the past. I would like to gift her with a keyboard piano of a decent quality so that she picks up her talent again. Any tips on how to get started in identifying a good keyboard piano, and is there a book of published hindi lyrics for the piano?

Thanks for your blog, I'm sure my mother-in-law will be very happy to see this after getting the piano.

Rgds,
Chandra
